About us

We are a hard working, family of eight. Swimming in the sea when we aren't busy on our small holding. Daddy dragon has to work away a lot, so this blog is to let him keep up with our adventures at home.

Birds and the bees

Hatchling no4 asked his big sister, 'Where do babies come from?'

She replied, 'Well, there was a little egg in the Mama's tummy and when it became two cells, why then the Mama's life, it begins!'

Hatchling no4 looks serious, 'What next?'

Hatchling no3 laughs and says, 'Well it takes a long time for the Mama to wait and grow, and then when the baby is big enough, Mama's happiness is born.'

 'Do you understand now?'

Hatchling no4 says, 'Yes, I am Mama's happiness.'

Hatchling no3 frowns, 'No, I am Mama's happiness.'

'That is what I said,' Hatchling no4 smiles confidently, 'I am Mama's happiness.'

Because sometimes you just need to make it that way.

Less than 50 shopping days left!

I received yet another email saying 'Less than fifty shopping days left until the BIG day!'

Sale on now!

It started with '100 days until Christmas' emails... in September.

And my least favourite: 'Treat your self because you deserve it.'

Do these shops not know that the year is only 356 days long?

Sadly, Hobbes is out dated... it is not one month, but more like three.

The age of not believing

(copied from leelouzworld)

The hatchlings, particularly my girls are growing up far faster than I'd like. Not because I wish them to stay infantile, but, sniff, it is nice when your children are still young enough to see your foibles as strengths.

For example, last night was our local bonfire, and fireworks night.

After packing the car full of hatchlings, and kit, and then remembering the chocolate chip cookies, and juice, we set off.

We sat and watched the fireworks from our warm snug car, and it was lovely.

Then we drove home.

hahahahahahahaheh.

Yeah, if only. You see, I  have made something of a reputation for myself in the 'getting lost' department.

Back when my eldest was 3 years old, she would look up at me with her big blue eyes, and tell me how much fun 'going on adventures' was.

When we took a wrong turn and spent thirty minutes trying to find a new way home, we'd 'find new places' and have 'adventures'.

For a brief while, they actually seemed to look forward to these deviations on our route home.

My pointing out all the new things we'd never seen before, sometimes stopping for cake and hot chocolate in a cafe we did not previously know existed while I asked directions, and fairly often finding a new play park which we'd return to on purpose a dozen more times.

About a year ago, the change had started, I made a wrong turn at a roundabout and ended up going east, when I wanted to go west. Seriously, those British roundabouts are not always as simple as they sound, in the dark, in rush hour traffic.... (that is my story and I am sticking to it.)

Well, that detour took me nearly 2 hours to correct.

There was no joy from the hatchlings, despite my pitstop to a petrol station to try to find a map, and buying celebratory chocolate, because we had never ever been here before. Woohoo!

The looks, sheesh.

When we arrived back in our own drive, the hatchlings began to question me, 'What is the gas milage on the car mama?' and say things like, ' You could have bought this and that if you hadn't gotten lost and spent it on petrol!'

Then last night, hatchling no1 told me, 'If that is what bonfire night is going to be like, well from now on, I think I'll stay home.'

Ouch.

So, I guess my adventure days are numbered.

Sigh.

Well, at this rate, it won't be long and hatchling no1 will be wanting to drive.

Maybe then she can get us home the first try, or maybe she might just have to re - learn to love going on adventures.

Where'd the cheese go?

Guess I wasn't quick enough with getting dinner ready...

400g of mature cheddar gone!

I suppose I should be thankful he climbed into his seat to eat it.

Instead of hiding behind the sofa, and wiping his hands on the carpet.

Back to trying to figure out what to make for dinner, as broccoli and cauliflower cheese just isn't the same with out cheese!

Cup mastered

'I've got great news to share!'

'Look! I'm doing it. I finally figured out this ridiculously difficult, suck so hard my eyeball are going to be pulled through the back of my head, spout.'

'You are paying more attention to what's going on in the back ground... aren't you!'

'Ahem, this is my photo shoot.'

'Much better.'

'Now, where were we... right, let's talk more, about me.'

Buying hatching eggs on Ebay,

is every bit as risky as it sounds.

First Kiwi

'You think it is a good idea to put this in my mouth!'

'Ah, I trusted you.'

'Does it improve over time?'

'Little bit tart.'

'You are going to blog this. Aren't you!'

Why?

Why do goats, with ten acres at their disposal...

eat all my roses,

and my irises,

and pull out my bedding plants?

Why do chicken's not go into their house,

when it rains?

Why do hatchling say, 'I'm hungry!'

and when I make crepes, they say, 'No t'ank you.'

Sometimes, I wonder why.

Sometimes, I write bad poetry.

Now I sit down to my wine,
I pray my sanity will realign.
For if some calm I do not find,
I rather fear for my peace of mind.

I pray I am given adequate time,
To overhaul the daily crime.
May I now rest and not arbitrate,
About the little teaser's fate.

Or why I decline to prepare new
another menu option or two
I pray for time to have a shower,
without a trio standing to glower.

To curl up in my soft, warm bed,
(A head count reveals one has fled!)
A moment or two just for me,
(For heaven's sake get out of that tree!)

And that I need not wipe the floor
more spilt milk, we'll need an oar.
Yes, now I sit down to my wine,
I pray my sanity will realign.
Upon reflection I do know,
I've not seen it since long ago.

Words to live by?

After wrestling a goat stuck horns first through the plastic rubbish bin,

and being bucked through the air by a dog not willing to try out this new training head collar, that I thought would be such a great idea,

and then being tossed down a steep rocky embankment into the cold atlantic by a 50 mph wind while trying to catch a runaway hatchling colouring sheet...

'Woo Hoo!'

Delinquent Ducks

These are the ducks who broke through the pen wall.

Who, zigged and zoomed through the blustery wind.

These are the squatters who took up residence in the garage.

Happy with their fortune, that the door had been blown clean off its hinges.

These are the insatiable devouring fiends, who ate through 25kg of feed.

Beach whale moans, they made, as I went out to feed them this morning.

These little blighters had nursed quite a stomach ache.

Now, I am left with the mess... oh the mess... and that spare bed we put in the shed... let's just say nobody will ever want to stay the night on that mattress again.

The view from my window today

It is pretty amazing,

watching from behind glass.

The wind has been blowing for days,

causing a fair bit of damage, lots of beautiful waves,

and frequent bad hair!

Days fly by

I am not going to try to justify what has kept me from blogging these last couple days. Instead, I will simply show you.

No, not over there!

Yeah, you!

Let me introduce the new characters.

The big lady, is Lilly. She is our 38 month old Anglo Nubian cross goat. The little guy is her 6 week old kid. He has been affectionately named 'Gobo'. He is so soft!

This guy here is Naveen.

He is our 12 month old Saanen.

He is one lucky guy, the hatchlings wanted to name the goats.

Here is the short list supplied by the hatchlings for Naveen:

White

Whitey

Snow white

White meat ball

White nugget

White paper

Paper poop

White light

Big W

Naveen

(I told you he was lucky. Their final vote was for White meat ball!)

Here is our sweetie pie.

This is Poppy. She is our 22 month old Anglo Nubian cross.

She likes to cuddle, which make her my favourite. (Shhhhh!)

The hatchlings and I journeyed off down south to collect them.

Hatchling no4 spent the entire 3 and half hour ferry crossing, telling everyone, over and over and over, my goat go on da boat!

You know how everyone says goats are mischievous.

That should not be overlooked.

Because I just want to share a little that is not in photos.

Like goats jump.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, everyone knows goats jump.

It is a heart attack inducing unique experience to have four goats in a box trailer driving on a narrow cliff... when they jump. It feels like the trailer is going to over turn the whole vehicle, or like perhaps the trailer has become unhitched and has banged into the car.

Nope, just a happy billy goat, showing off to the ladies.

Sigh.

Oh, and goats get sea sick.

For real.

The moment you open the trailer door, they run like wild fire.

You find out how awesome they are at hoping streams, fences, and onto the roof.

I ran my 10k within the first 40 minutes they were home.

I woke up aching like I am 80.

But I have goats.

Maaaaaah dnesss.

Spring time

Spring

One small boy chopped the laptop power cord in half (safety scissors my tushie!), which has put a serious kink in my blog materials... given the iMac refuses to talk to my canon. Apparently the canon offended the mac when it opened it's big mouth and began sputtering powerpc upload info.

So I am now stalking the post man, in hopes that he will soon bring me back to the land of all things internet, and photo software.
