About us

We are a hard working, family of eight. Swimming in the sea when we aren't busy on our small holding. Daddy dragon has to work away a lot, so this blog is to let him keep up with our adventures at home.

Reorganising, rediscovering, and kicking up a fuss

Pinned Image

Change.

Change.

Change.

Nope, no matter how I type it, it still looks like a swear word from where I am sitting.

Comfortable.

Now, there is a word I like.

Life is rarely ideal, but comfortable, that is just about the way I like it.

It is what I know.

What I like, and most importantly, what I can usually predict.

(Unless a hatchling happens to be helpful. This little hatchling handwashes my favourite coffee mug. To help mama, no matter my protests, and I am thankful. Now, the first clue that there was change would have been the half a litre of dish soap gone astray. Nonetheless, my mug of coffee, bubbly coffee, that smelt and tasted of lemon, certainly was not comfortable. Thank you hatchling no 4!)

Motivation.

There is my achilles heel.

I have goals, and I am motivated to try to attain them.

Often this requires change. Dirty word that one.

Even worse, is when the path to my goals changes.

I get all flustered, and start to fear that maybe, my goals have changed, and I must find new goals.

What is up with that?

I hold each goal up to the light, and inspect it carefully before placing it gently back in my 'to accomplish' box.

They (my goals) are steadfast.

Thank goodness.

But the road there is not as simple or as short as I thought.

Go figure, that is blooming par for the course!

I have a handful of hatchlings and as they grow, the world turns and everything changes.

It is enough to make this mama stomp her feet, fling herself on the floor and have a proper paddy.

Honestly, just when I have a perfect set of jigsaw puzzles, a wide range for every age group, the hatchlings, they do not want to play puzzles. Seriously, who is going to play puzzles with me! I still like puzzles...

I digress.

Because the terrible truth is I even seek it out, and I invite it in for tea.

I crave change, and all the new possibilities it brings.

Oh, I am all female! I reserve the right to want it and then fight, kick and scream about it every step of the way.

Yet, I do believe.

I am exactly where I need to be.

And when I think I know what is best for me, when I want to yell, 'but I want, and I want, and I want this!'

I am re - navigated, forced to stare the big ugly, yet harmonious beast of change in the eye.

So, I am going to change and follow the path that is mine to take.

I will change and go where I need to, and try my best to learn all I can from where ever I am meant to be.

And no this is not a potty training post. Just in case anyone had wondered, if perhaps it had actually become a fight of that magnitude. Though honestly, boys do want to do this at some point, like as a commitment right? Not a I can do it correctly thirty times and then not again for two weeks! Just cause ya know, I am just not feeling the potty mojo here. Meh, one day he will want a girlfriend, it has to happen at some point!

Some Mondays are long

Today has been a long day.

Isn't it funny how some days just slip through your fingers, and others float about like dust specks in a stream of sunshine. Unending. Or so it feels.

The hatchlings and I travelled to the mainland today to do some shopping.

It is so effortless to say that.

I recall the first time I ventured out on my own with hatchling no1, her just two-days old, 6 pounds of instinct.

I had a list, I was determined, I could get it done.

One item on my list was to go grocery shopping. I tried repeatedly to go in and shop. Every time I went inside the store, my newly born daughter wailed, that newborn cry that makes your knees wobble and your brain turn off to danger, anything to sooth that baby. Back and forth we went, from the shop to the car, where I'd nurse her back to sleep, and then try again. In the end I gave up, after five hours of trying, I thought that is it, I can't do it. I had a baby and now I'm never going to be able to even buy groceries. Hormones probably had a lot to say for it, but today, I felt great deal of empathy for the me of many years ago. Today was tough, like that.

Thankfully, the day is done, and tomorrow is a whole new day.

Here's to a relaxed Tuesday, or at least more so than Monday.

While the hatchlings play

Today, was a day to slog through the unbelievably horrid headache I am carrying, and just get stuff done.

The girls had turned their bedroom upside down. So, we began by sorting through clothes, books, toys, and treasures. After everything had been returned to its home, we started on the long list of little tedious items.

While I hung the hatchlings a new coat rack,

They played dog training.

While I hung the bathroom mirror,

They practiced their drum solos... all at once. (Did I mention I have a headache?)

While I re - organized the garage, cleaned out the sty, and turned over a patch of ground for our seed potatoes,

(there is no photo of this, it is far too mundane. lol)

The puppy slept,

the hatchlings rode their bikes,

and somehow out of nowhere lunch crept up on us.

So while I made us egg and potato bakes, yum....

the hatchlings played.

Happy headachy Saturday.

Today, I am thankful for children who play so well together.

A letter or two...

The girls spent their morning at the kitchen table. Diligently penning letters to their nearest and dearest. At last they had all been addressed and given appropriate postage. We went off in search of a post box.

This is our nearest post box.

We made it to the post box on foot. I probably should have taken it as a warning, after having a neighbor stop and offer us a lift.

One little girl, the only one tall enough, stretched up and pushed the envelops into the postbox.

The wind blew like it was late for an appointment.

Away blew the letters.

We chased these letters... correction, I chased these letters through one field after another. Over fences; some barbed, others electrified, and into an abandoned croft.

A sheep stepped on one, which I removed gratefully from beneath her hoof.

These poor girls were absolutely hysterical sitting beside this post box, as I chased the letters all over this blooming island. All the love and care they'd put in, being flung about like abandoned plastic carrier bags.

So, when you receive a letter, rain sodden and hoof printed, from the hatchlings, please know it was not through lack of care that they arrived so disheveled.

You have to work pretty hard to get them that muddy!

The day that continues long after dark

I had planned to post about our journey. Which I will... should this day ever actually draw to a close.

Because it has been one of those days.

Where I feel rather like I am bouncing from one catastrophe to the next.

Like a bad sitcom.

So it is, that I find myself, at midnight.

The plumber, a very nice man, with a very thick accent, is carving holes in my walls.

Looking for where the water is coming from.

The water that continues to pour, with out source.

It is certain that it it is pouring from some where.

As the carpet from one room to the next becomes sodden.

It all started when a hatchling tried to perch on a radiator.

A lot like this one.

The radiator tore away from the wall, and despite the amount of effort it took to lift the great heavy beast back, apparently something was still wrong in the wall.

Not that the day started with this water and dead radiator issue.

I'm just hoping this is the last of todays character building exercises.
